New England came out in full force!
On May 16-18, the Tyngsborough Sports Center was lit up with smoke machines, lights, and obstacles. The best athletes in New England gathered for their Tier 1 Regionals in hopes of punching their tickets to the Tier 1 Championships. Read on to see how the biggest showdown in New England panned out!
With such a competitive field attending this event, only 4 athletes were able to secure the wins on both the Flow and Challenge Courses. Those athletes were Justine B Simard (Kids Female), Jeremy Casella (Mature Kids Male), Gavin Sheils (Preteen Male), and Lucas Reale (Adult Male).
Not only did these athletes manage to win on both of their courses, but they also cleared both courses! With many athletes in these divisions hitting buzzers, our Regional Champions made sure to lock the top spot with the fastest times on each course. Congratulations!
The scoring of Regionals takes the placements of athletes as point values. Many of New England’s Regional Champions earned a score of 3 by winning one course and placing 2nd on another. Those athletes included Joey Stone (Kids Male), Meghan Moore (Preteen Female), Cameron Godbout (Teen Male), Jaazib Ismail (Young Adult Male), Emma Millette (Young Adult Female), and John Hegarty (Masters Male).
Ismail and Hagerty won the Flow Course and placed 2nd on the Challenge Course. Meanwhile, Stone, Moore, Godbout, and Millette won the Challenge Course and placed 2nd on the Flow Course. All athletes listed hit buzzers on both courses!
For the rest of the divisions, buzzers were being hit left and right, but that came with many surprises. Only those who remained calm and collected became Regional Champions. Those athletes were Taya Kelley (Mature Kids Female), Allison Bond (Teen Female), Olivia Keyes (Adult Female), Jill Burns (Masters Female), Gavin Obey (Elite Male), Addy Herman (Elite Female).
The leaderboards changed drastically at any given moment, notably evidenced in the Elite Female division’s Challenge Course. Herman’s run on the Flow Course was enough to keep her in title contention, but it was on the Challenge Course where the perfect storm led to her being the only finisher and the Elite Female Champion.
With the New England season at a close, the World Championships looms on the horizon. Be sure to check out the action on June 20-23 when the Tier 1 Championships kick off!
